Clerk’s Office partners with The Spring of Tampa Bay to observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the Clerk’s Office is partnering with The Spring of Tampa Bay, Hillsborough County’s only certified domestic violence center, to raise public awareness about this pressing problem in our community.

Every year, the Clerk’s Office processes about 6,600 applications for domestic violence restraining orders. Sadly, domestic violence does not take a break for the holidays. Our clerks, along with employees of The Spring who have been deputized, process restraining order applications seven days a week, 365 days a year.

To ease the burden of this process, the Clerk’s Office made improvements in recent months at the domestic violence office at the George Edgecomb Courthouse in downtown Tampa. The office was expanded and applicants are automatically registered to allow them to view records online so they do not have to return to the courthouse to keep up with the progress of their applications.  Learn more.

“We are honored to receive this national award as recognition for the hard work my finance staff does every day for the citizens of Hillsborough County,” Frank said.

The office was honored for the clerk’s 2015-16 budget, which can be viewed here.
The Government Finance Officers Association serves about 18,700 appointed and elected local, state, and provincial-level government officials and other finance practitioners. More than $600,000 available in unclaimed funds

More than $600,000 in unclaimed funds will be returned to the state unless the owners contact us by Sept. 1.

The amounts range from more than $20,000 to $5. The money is in a variety of forms, including checks, cash, liens, garnishments, bonds and transfers of judgment.

“We would hate to see anyone let money that belongs to them go unclaimed,” said Clerk of Court & Comptroller Pat Frank.

Please review this list to see if any of this money belongs to you. If you believe you have an interest in these funds, please write to us at P.O. Box 1110, attn: CCC Accounting, Tampa, FL 33601. If not claimed by Sept. 1 the money will be forfeited.

For further information please call (813) 276-8100.

Additional court records are available online

A broader range of court records are now available online beginning today (June 30). Most court records will be available without the need to register.

Records sealed by a judge or through a court rule will not be available. Registration will be required, however, to view Family Law, Mental Health and Probate records. Go here for more details.

Confidential information, defined by the Florida Rules of Judicial Administration, will be redacted before records are made available for public viewing. Records will be scanned electronically and then reviewed by court clerks before they are released. The required redaction takes time so there will be delays between when a record is requested and when it is made available. Our office will strive to provide public access as quickly as possible.

Clerk’s Office wins second statewide award

Pictured with the award are (left to right) Chief of Staff Dan Klein, Director of Board of County Commissioners Records Kimberly Richards, Pat Frank and FGFOA President Barry Skinner. Clerk of Court and Comptroller Pat Frank has won the ACE Award (Advanced Commitment to Excellence) from the Florida Government Finance Officers Association (FGFOA).
This is the second statewide award the Clerk's Office has won this year. The first was the Florida Excellence Best Practices Award, presented in April for a major restructuring that improved customer service, increased efficiency and enhanced communication.

The latest award, presented Monday during the opening session of the association’s annual conference in Orlando, was in the category of Process Improvement. The award recognized new procedures that created electronic storage and signatures of County Commission documents and online access of those documents for the public.

The initiative increased transparency, efficiency and accuracy. As a result of this initiative, the public can access important BOCC records online.

The FGFOA was founded in 1937 and serves more than 2,800 professionals from state, county and city governments, school districts, colleges and universities, special districts and private firms through education, networking, leadership and information.

“I am honored to receive an award from such a prestigious group,” said Frank. “To be one of only two recipients of awards is gratifying. I am particularly proud of the leadership of Kimberly Richards, the director of board records, who played an essential role in winning this award.”

Beware:  Con artists use jury duty to scam people

Citizens across the United States are being targeted by phone calls and e-mails threatening them with arrest or prosecution for failing to comply with jury service in state and federal courts.  Recipients are being pressured to provide money or confidential data, which could lead to identity theft, in order to avoid fines and jail time.

It is the policy of the Clerk of the Court to contact prospective jurors only through a written court summons sent by U.S. Mail.  Jurors are not contacted by telephone, email, text message or any other medium.  Jury Services does not need or ask for your personal information and does not require a monetary payment of any amount.

If you receive a call requesting personal information or money, immediately call the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (813) 247-8000.

Concerned citizens may also contact Jury Services at the Clerk’s Office at 813-276-8100 ext. 4747 to determine whether or not they have been summoned for jury service.
